Why this module matters

Learning that helps staff decide what to do next.

Recognising concerns, professional curiosity, recording, escalation and your safeguarding duties.

Dragonfly modules are designed for people supporting children, adults and vulnerable communities. The goal is not simply to pass a quiz. The goal is to build the language, confidence and professional judgement needed in real practice.

Learning outcomes

  • Recognise concern, risk and threshold indicators with professional curiosity.
  • Understand when to record, consult, escalate or share information.
  • Practise realistic safeguarding decisions where several responses may seem reasonable.
  • Explain the rationale for safer action in supervision, audit or inspection.
Professional judgement assessment preview

A child makes a brief comment that worries a staff member, then quickly changes the subject. What should the learner practise?

A. Stay calm, listen without investigating, record the child’s words accurately, follow safeguarding procedures and seek advice from the DSL promptly.
B. Ask several clarifying questions immediately so the staff member can decide whether the child is telling the truth before passing it on.
C. Wait to see whether the child mentions it again, because one unclear comment may cause unnecessary worry for the family.
D. Promise the child it will stay private so they feel safe enough to explain the full story later.

Preferred answer: A. Foundation safeguarding is about recognising concern, responding safely, recording accurately and escalating — not investigating or making promises.

Assessment design: Dragonfly uses sample scenarios with plausible distractors, balanced answer lengths and deliberate complexity checks so staff have to read carefully rather than guess the longest or most detailed option.
